MEDICINE WHEEL
SHAMANIC JOURNEYING
FOUR DIRECTIONS
A full training document will be emailed to you once you have signed up for the course. Below is an overview of the Medicine Wheel – The Four Directions session.
This session introduces the Medicine Wheel as a living framework rather than a fixed belief system. We work with it as a way of understanding cycles, balance, and relationships, with ourselves, with others, and with the wider world. The Wheel offers orientation rather than answers, helping us notice where we are, what is being asked of us, and what may need attention or support.
The Four Directions are explored as qualities and experiences rather than rigid definitions. Each direction carries its own energy, challenges, and gifts, and we all move through them repeatedly throughout life. This work is about listening, reflection, and embodied understanding, not memorising meanings or doing things in a prescribed way.
This session can stand alone, but it also provides an important foundation for the journey work and group sessions that follow. While it is recommended that courses are taken in sequence, you are welcome to attend even if this is your first experience of this way of working.
Please note that some contextual teachings and shared language are introduced in the introductory course and are not repeated here, due to time constraints.
The session will include:
An opening circle using the talking stick
An introduction to the Medicine Wheel as a framework for reflection and balance
Exploration of the Four Directions and how they relate to life stages, emotions, and patterns
Working with the altar to physically anchor the directions
A guided journey around the Medicine Wheel and the Four Directions
A closing circle
You will be invited to bring five meaningful items with you. These can be crystals, amulets, small objects, pieces of jewellery, or anything else that feels right.
Each item should represent one of the five directions we work with: Fire, Water, Earth, Air, and Spirit.
The item for Spirit is the most personal. This is not about symbolism or getting it “right”. Spirit represents you. Choose something that feels deeply meaningful, something that holds your essence, your story, or your presence in the work.
You are also welcome to bring anything that will help you feel comfortable and settled, such as a blanket, slippers, or water. A journal and pen are recommended. Please bring what you need, but keep it simple.
